John S. Pillsbury and family papers, 1833-1934.

Financial and legal records, a few letters, and other materials relating chiefly to the business affairs of Pillsbury, a Minneapolis businessman who was governor of Minnesota (1876-1882), to his brother, Charles Alfred Pillsbury, and to his nephew, also Charles A. The bulk of the papers (1908-1909) consist of proofs of indebtedness filed by creditors of Pillsbury-Washburn Flour Mills Company, Ltd., which failed in 1908 and was succeeded by Pillsbury Flour Mills Company.

John Sargent Pillsbury was born in Sutton, New Hampshire, and came to the village of St. Anthony MN in 1855 to open a hardware business. 15 years later, he began his flour milling enterprise, which became one of the largest in the world. Paris Gibson was born on July 1, 1830, in Brownfield, Maine. He was the son of Abel and Anne (Howard) Gibson. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1851. In 1853 he was elected to the Maine legislature. In August 1858, Gibson married Valeria G. Sweat, who was born in Brownfield, on Nov. 30, 1839.
